Ways to Buy Life Insurance and Which is Best

There are many different ways to purchase life insurance. You can call a 800 number and get quotes from the phone. You can respond to a direct mail offer and apply that way. Or you can contact a local agent in your area and purchase it that way.

Depending who you are and what type of service you want determines what way you go about purchasing. Keep in mind that when you deal with direct mail offers and 800 numbers please read the small print and know what you are getting yourself into. Its cheap for a reason, and how does the saying go, 'You get what you pay for'.
Something you have to keep a watch out for is does the policy your buying underwrite afterwards. In such cases the insurance company underwrites after and can find many reasons after death to not pay the claim. So be on the look out.

Traditionally underwriting is done before approval and there is always a 2 year incontestibility period, which is to protect the insurance company from fraud and mistatements in the application. If someone dies before the 2 years is up the insurance company will look to see if there was any fraud and if not then they pay the claim. But after 2 years the insurance company has to pay regardless whether there is misstatements or not.

But with policies that do not require any underwriting in the beginning this is not the case as mentioned above. The insurance company can contest the claim after death so your kind of at a disadvantage when you are not underwriten in the beginning.

I feel the best way to buy life insurance is to buy from a licensed local life insurance agent. They can provide you with personal service, educate you on your different options, and continue to provide service for years to come. Something you won't get from direct mail or 800 numbers. Another thing you can count on is that you will be dealing with a company that is backed by your states guarantee association. An association that will pay your claim in case the company your dealing with goes belly up. There are many other advanatges to buying from a local agent as well.

One more tip to add:
When the premium for a life insurance policy seems to good to be true, please do yourself a favor and look at the fine print in your policy copy to make sure its legite and doesnt have many clauses that prevent you from receiving the death benefit.
